"We don't complain; it's just part of being a woman": frequency, knowledge, and sociocultural beliefs about dysmenorrhoea in a South African university cohort

Introduction Dysmenorrhoea is highly prevalent globally and interferes with engagement in education, work, social participation, and quality of life. Although evidence suggests that sociocultural beliefs influence how menstrual pain is understood and managed, relatively little research has explored dysmenorrhoea-related knowledge and beliefs within South Africa. This study aimed to (1) determine the frequency of dysmenorrhoea, (2) assess dysmenorrhoea-related knowledge and compare knowledge between menstruating and non-menstruating individuals, and (3) explore commonly held generational, cultural, and religious beliefs related to dysmenorrhoea in a South African university cohort. Methods We analysed data collected as part of a cross-sectional survey conducted among staff and students at a South African university. Participants completed demographic questions, items assessing dysmenorrhoea-related knowledge, and an adapted Working Ability, Location, Intensity, Days of Pain, Dysmenorrhoea (WaLIDD) questionnaire. Participants were also invited to provide free-text responses describing generational, cultural, and religious beliefs about dysmenorrhoea. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively and compared between menstruating and non-menstruating participants. Free-text responses were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results A total of 863 participants completed the survey, including 578 current or past menstruators. The frequency (95%CI) of dysmenorrhoea was 75.4% (71.7-78.9). Most participants were classified as having moderate (53%) or severe (31%) dysmenorrhoea on the WaLIDD scale. Are We There Yet? Exploring the Capabilities of MLLMs in Assistive AI Applications

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have redefined visual understanding by combining vision encoders with large-scale language models. This unified architecture enables strong performance on tasks like image captioning, visual question answering, and multimodal dialogue, often in zero- and few-shot settings. Their general-purpose capabilities and flexible interfaces make MLLMs a promising foundation for real-world vision-language applications. Assistive AI aims to help users interact with their environments through natural language. These scenarios demand robust visual recognition, contextual reasoning, and multilingual comprehension-capabilities that MLLMs are believed to offer. However, their effectiveness in assistive settings remains to be fully understood. In this work, we explore whether MLLMs can support Assistive AI by evaluating state-of-the-art models on real-world tasks: recognizing everyday objects like currency, answering questions based on scene text, and reading visually presented content across multiple languages. To this end, we developed a system, NetraLink, using a head-mounted GoPro to capture real-world egocentric data, and collected a benchmark covering these assistive scenarios. Our findings provide a comprehensive diagnostic of current MLLMs, highlighting their strengths and limitations in enabling assistive technologies grounded in visual perception and language interaction.

Longitudinal multi-omics characterization of the malignant evolution in multirelapsing glioblastoma

Linking glioblastoma (GBM) evolution to clinical progression is challenged by multiple factors, including tumor location for repeated sample collection, and short patient survival. In a single individual, we collected and analysed samples from 11 operations distributed across 31 months of multi-relapsing and multifocal GBM, including terminal leptomeningeal progression. All samples shared genomic ancestry of the retinoblastoma protein 1 (RB1) and neurofibromin 1 (NF1) mutations while advanced progression and extracranial metastases featured mutations of tuberous sclerosis complex 2 (TSC2), PBRM1, CD22 and Fanconi anemia supplementation group I (FANCI), correlated with clinical resistance to immunotherapies and DNA-damaging agents. Single-cell analytics revealed distinct yet reversible shifts in response to the precision medicine arsenal. GBM parenchymal dissemination and extracranial progression were associated with strengthening of neuron-like cell phenotypes. Our multidimensional study describes GBM evolution over a rarely reported time scale, and provides a valuable resource linking genetic, molecular, cellular and clinical progressions.

Smarter edits? Post-editing with error highlights and translation suggestions

As MT quality increases, interest in enhanced post-editing features such as QE-derived error highlights is growing, yet evidence for their usefulness remains limited. In this work, we explore the usefulness of LLM-derived error highlights and correction suggestions based on automatic post-editing (APE). We conduct a study where professional translators (En-Nl) post-edit translations using APE error highlights and correction suggestions and compare productivity, quality and user experience to regular PE and PE with QE-derived highlights. While no condition yielded productivity or quality gains compared to regular PE, APE highlights were better received than QE-derived highlights, and correction suggestions improved overall user experience.

Conditional squeezing induced by a two-level system: arbitrary-time Magnus coefficients in the quantum Rabi model

arXiv:2508.03506v5 Announce Type: replace Abstract: We present a systematic Magnus expansion treatment of the quantum Rabi model beyond the Rotating Wave Approximation. We show that at the second order of Magnus series, the second-order evolution operator contains a term that induces conditional squeezing of the field mode depending on the state of the atom, in addition to the energy shifts. We analyze the scaling behavior of the conditional squeezing coefficient for $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ $5^2S_{1/2}\rightarrow5^2P_{1/2}$ transition line and show that the slow envelope of the squeezing coefficient is maximized at half-detuning cycles, and that it scales with $\frac{4g^2}{\omega_0|\Delta|}$. We also show that the quadrature squeezing angle suggests a possible route towards quantum non-demolition readouts, while further investigation is required for a full first-order suppression. We then connect our work to the well-studied AC-Stark shift and Bloch-Siegert shift using the effective Hamiltonian theory. Finally, we show how the energy shifts and the conditional squeezing arise, as a whole $\mathrm{SU}(1,1)$ algebra, and how they can be disentangled as individual unitary evolutions.

Reinforcement Learning Towards Broadly and Persistently Beneficial Models

As AI systems are deployed across increasingly diverse and high-stakes settings, model alignment must generalize beyond the tasks and domains seen during training. This is especially important for reinforcement learning (RL), which can introduce unexpected misalignment through reward hacking, deception, or other unintended strategies. We study whether RL on beneficial behavior, instantiated in realistic domains, can produce broad and persistent alignment generalization beyond the training distribution. We construct a dataset of realistic situations designed to measure and train beneficial traits, such as truthfulness, fairness, risk awareness, and corrigibility, spanning varied domains, including health, science, and education. We then train models with RL on this dataset and evaluate them on more than 50 independent benchmarks of alignment and beneficial behavior. Compared to a compute-matched baseline, beneficial trait RL improves performance on over 80% of these out-of-distribution benchmarks. We observe substantial out-of-distribution alignment transfer: a beneficial-behavior RL intervention entirely limited to one domain, health, produces broad improvements on non-health alignment evaluations, including reduced reward hacking, deception, and general misalignment. Finally, we study alignment persistence: whether behavior remains robustly aligned under attempts to steer models towards misalignment. Models trained with beneficial trait RL show improved persistence, including greater resistance to adversarial prompting and harmful finetuning; further work is required to isolate the sources of these effects. These results suggest that RL to reinforce beneficial behavior in realistic domains can produce models that are more robustly aligned with human flourishing.
